Amputation Free India: An Initiative To End Diabetes-Related Amputations

Diabetes is one of the most alarming health concerns of the global population. Today 383 million people, accounting for 8.3% of the global population, suffer from diabetes. And the numbers are only expected to witness a great rise by the year 2040. The complications of diabetes range from mild to severe. One of the complications of diabetes is diabetic foot.

The high blood sugar levels in the body can cause damage to nerves and the blood vessels in the foot. The scientific name for this condition is diabetic neuropathy. Diabetic foot engenders loss of sensation, tingling feeling, or pain in the foot. In some cases, ulcers and wounds are likely to develop. And if it is not treated timely, one may even need to get their foot amputated.

Therefore, to contain the condition and make India diabetes-related amputation-free, Dr. Ravul Jindal has initiated the Amputation Free India campaign. It is an awareness campaign initiated by Dr. Ravul Jindal to bring awareness about the condition. According to reports, 80% of amputations can be avoided with regular examination and awareness. And with this campaign, he hopes to put create awareness about the situation and abolish it completely.

Although the concatenation of the condition can be slowed down, there is no known cure for the condition other than amputation. Therefore, it is advised that one should take certain measures to prevent diabetic foot instead of looking for treatment later. And to prevent this, the most crucial part remains spreading awareness.
